Reality programme investigates world in which the poor live
Solidarity Helping Hand hereby invites the media to the filming of a reality programme at the Coronation Park squatter camp in Krugersdorp on, Wednesday, 21 July. The filming will form part of Deon Maas’ music reality programme n Jam Sandwich, which will be broadcast on SABC 2 from September this year.
During the filming in Coronation Park, the gospel group Back to Basics and the African pop group Jaziel Brothers will be the group leaders of five potjiekos teams in the squatter camp. This will expose the artists to the immediate living conditions of impoverished white people.
The aim of the programme is to expose two groups of artists from different sections of the musical spectrum to various realities in South Africa, following which they must join forces to compose a song.
The process is then documented and broadcast as part of the reality programme. The first series, which was broadcast in 2008, received two South African Film and Television Awards: one for Best Music Programme and another for Best Concept.
“Helping Hand is happy to see South African artists acknowledging the reality of white poverty in South Africa,” said Dr Danie Langner, executive director of Helping Hand. “The extent of the silent poverty among Afrikaners is huge. Reality programmes such as this are essential in creating awareness in order to combat the growing poverty crisis in our country.”
